It is a misconception that every fluid is the same as water. It is of course no question that they contain water. However, they also contain solid material as well. Our body needs water to process and digest solid material. Therefore, if you drink fluid that has high solid material/ water ratio, then your body will not get the clean water that it requires for good digestion.
The minimum daily amount of water is about 5 cups (one litre) for a child, or precisely 1 cup per every 12 pounds (1 dl per every 3 kilograms). Additionally, it is also possible to consume tea, soup, and fruits.
Beverages that contain caffeine have diuretic effects. Consequently, the more you drink them, the more water you need to drink afterward in order to replace the water that your body has lost and to prevent the dehydration of your body.
Beverages that contain alcohol also hasten the secretion of water from your body, so they are not suitable to replenish water either.
Soft drinks and fruit juices have many preservatives and taste enhancers.
Your child should not have more than 1 glass of such drinks per day!
